I also love revitalization. I want it for some of my current ones that have been dead for almost 10 years.

hell yeah!

I really love it when there’s an influx of new people in my fandoms and, in my experience, most people love the newbies too. The only ones where people sometimes complain about the newbies are certain bandoms (and sometimes the newbies are young kids who say dumb things, but it’s not like older fans are immune to being dumb).

I'm not active in fandom beyond reading (and writing, occasionally) fic, so I I'm generally happy when new people get into the fandom if that means more fic for me to read.

In my early days, I was super welcoming, and since it was an pair specific archive site & forum, the community was nice! Idk if I'd be the same these days lol probably not. But maybe, as I sail through fandoms, picking up what fic I like, enjoying my spoils as I travel to new and distant lands, so...I probably would be pretty welcoming lol

I don’t think it’s newbie enthusiasm that old fans generally get annoyed with.

I think it’s that when a lot of newbies join a fandom suddenly, there’s a tendency for them to dominate, and act like they are total experts on the canon and the fanon when often they barely know what they’re talking about yet. Or are just repeating the basic 101 shit as though it’s extremely insightful and nobody’s ever thought of it that way before.

I don’t hate newbies, myself. I’m just saying, I think there are reasons that some fandom olds find newbies tiresome, and I don’t think it’s because of their enthusiasm.

There's a fascinating (horrible) phenomenon going on the Hannibal fandom right now since it re-aired on Netflix and brought in a lot of teens/early-20s, where a lot of the younger people's idea of a good time is calling older fans "hags" and accusing them of "pedophilia" and writing "degenerate" fics.

For a show about a sexy middle-aged serial killer/cannibal and his corrupted middle-aged therapy-client boyfriend. With no child characters at all.

It's awesome to get new fans who are genuinely enthusiastic about the fandom, but if that "enthusiasm" takes the form of trying to take over, shame older fans for being older, and "cleaning up" "problematic content" (even in a fandom for a MA-rated show) than nah, no thanks, I'll gatekeep the fuck out of that.

i'm never going to get over the notion that in the relationship between a murdering cannibal and his emotional gaslit victim, it's the age gap that's problematic.

Or that it's somehow "weird" and "creepy" for 30+ fans to stan a couple of Gen X DILFs but NOT weird for teenagers to do so.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-29 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that happens. But sometimes, people are just sourpusses.

AYRT - True.

I kind of agree. I've been in a particular fandom for more than 20 years and I've been told multiple times that things I was actually there for aren't true. I've taken to just ignoring it, but it's really annoying.

i've got no patience for people who are assholes to new fans, you literally have no reason to be and don't need to do it. if anything i find it fun when there's some new voices squeeing over things because it can bring back my initial squee too, it's a great feeling!

(Anonymous) 2020-09-29 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
But what about new fans who are assholes to older fans? The comment above about Hannibal reflects stuff going on in other fandoms too.

It's consistent with my experience in several older fandoms that got an influx of young fans recently. The problem isn't young/new fans' squeeing enthusiasm or lack of knowledge of canon minutiae. It's their bossiness, cruelty, and puritanism combined with their misogynistic/ageist hate of older women (mommy issues on display), and their sense of entitlement (all those icky people who do fandom a way I don't like should go away because I SAY SO).

I WELCOME squeeing enthusiasm. As long as it doesn't come with the always-unpleasant-and-unwelcome traits above. Unfortunately, all too often it does.

And let's be honest, Fandom of Yore was no kind, friendly space necessarily. I still remember sporking communities and the Godawful Fan Fiction Forum, and truly nasty ship wars that got people doxxed and all that. Gatekeeping was rampant then too.

I don't remember nearly as many completely bogus accusations of pedophilia, though. That was really rare up until about 5 or 6 years ago.

If you're having fun that's fine lol just tell your fellow new fans to stop calling everyone else pedophiles and child rapists lol
