Dark and Gritty is probably too strong a description for what the show ended up being.

Yeah, the first two episodes or so added some dark stuff to do with Anne's backstory, but I wouldn't call the series as a whole "dark and gritty." It deals with some serious topics over the course of its run, but not in an unduly dark and gritty way, imo.
