not sure what this has to do with the Big Lebowski, which is one of my favorite movies, but OK

Coming from the POV of someone who did not engage in tumblr porn/sex work, this is kinda false.

The whole ban was part of a huge influx of things that caused an exodus. For one, the algorithm was incredibly faulty, requiring people to contest reports for things that hand nothing to do with nudity (like sand dunes and paper that was similar to caucasian skin tones). The other was the growing prevalence and what appeared to be unregulation of porn bots. So while tumblr was claiming no nudity, porn bots were EVERYWHERE.

And as people's mutuals/friends left due to these things, they decided to leave themselves, creating a domino effect.

This doesn't mean that this was not a huuuuuuge influence. But it's not the only influence.

Tangentially related, but I find it fascinating that in 2012, I considered tumblr to be the biggest hellsite of social media. Tumblr is now the only one I can tolerate. This has nothing to do with the porn by the way.

Same. I still hang out there because I think Twitter and Facebook are even more insufferable.

It's truly amazing how much worse Twitter and Facebook revealed themselves to be. Tumblr sucks but... wow, Twitter and Facebook have taken that suckage to a whole new level.

I mean, Tumblr also did the "won't ban Nazis" thing.

It's just under less scrutiny because it's less popular

(Anonymous) 2020-09-29 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr gets plenty of scrutiny, hence why so many people left it.

I'm talking about from governments

Well, a lot of tumblr moved onto twitter so that might have something to do. It's like all the wankers flounced at once.

Tumblr isn't completely dead but it is certainly way less popular than it was before the ban. A ton of artists, both NSFW and SFW, ditched the site altogether.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-30 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Which as an artist I find frustrating, because Twitter is really shitty for art archival, and the search function gets clogged with people who use potential search terms like character and ship names in their display name.

I doubt this was your intention, and I'm not accusing you of it, but something about the inclusion of sex workers and "saying tumblr is dead because it doesn't quote cater unquote to you is dumb" feels kinda slut shamey in a way I can't really articulate...

I want to believe they're just two separate thoughts that go poorly together in terms of their connotations though...

(Anonymous) 2020-09-30 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Those were my thoughts, too. Hopefully we're just reading it wrong, but... only OP knows if they clarify.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-30 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

Except I kinda think it might have been their intention

(Anonymous) 2020-09-30 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you have a problem articulating it because... it isn't?
