I do all my formatting in Word. Amazon gives you a specific formatting for the page trim and stuff. So, I follow that and choose my own font size/indent size. (I mocked it off a trad book. so 11 pt Times New Roman, 1/4 inch indent, no spacing. 3 inches down chapter start.) I'm pretty familiar with word, so mostly it's remembering to do an e-book formatting and a paperback formatting. (Changing the trim size and having a table of contents. Take out any pictures in the ebook b/c they don't show up well. Sigh.)

As for uploading, it's mostly TIME consuming. Amazon takes forever and then you have to check it. And they'll run a quick spellcheck for you. (It does not catch everything.) So sometimes it will catch something I haven't. You have to fix it. Change the file name. Reupload. I try to set an entire day aside for this.

I screwed up the page numbers of the Dawn Warrior the first time. I had them on the inside of the page rather than the outside corner. I have fixed it. But it was pretty funny (to me.) I mean, it's mostly being kind to yourself and fixing what you can.

I design my own covers. I err... am not 100% sure I rec this unless you have some design skills. Book covers are Ad boards and it's easy to get too many elements and be cluttered. I know that my book covers aren't as STRONG as some "character art" covers. On the other hand, I have a lot of indie books in my kindle and it's funny to see the SAME stock photos being used over and over. I'd rather you be able to pick mine out of a line up. I'm happy with them. (And have tried to change the fairy tale ones like 3 times and never like them, so the originals they stay.) Book covers can be very "fad" driven. So you need to pay attention to it. The BEST covers I've seen in indie, haven't been fad driven character art ones at all.

Thank you! I'm not sure I'd ever try self publishing myself, but it's such a fascinating subject.

You're welcome. There is a major learning curve. It's something you definitely learn over time/need to do the research.
