Almost all independent, self published YA 'books' that I've had recommended to me have been garbage. I'm not sure how much of it was fandom in disguise. It's hard to differentiate.

I feel like shit romance fanfic tends to get the serial numbers filed off a lot more frequently because YA still hasn't moved on from the tropes its been vomiting out since it's emergence. It's always had a lot in common when it comes to certain flavors of fic. So of course fic writers are jumping in.

Honestly, Goodreads gets flack for how incredibly ugly it's interface is but places like that are invaluable. Some of the reviews there and quoted book dialogue have saved me money.
