I think the term has been unnecessarily weaponized due to overuse. I think Americans in particular (speaking as one) have been very used to cherry-picking our way through a heterogeneous culture and exporting everything about ourselves, that it's really hard to draw the line between 'bad' or 'good' cultural appropriation. Once it became clear that there are bad ways to do it, everything became negative appropriation. It's swung so far to the "Every time you use or reference an element of a culture or religion that you were not born to you are Scum" that now it's hard to have a meaningful conversation about it.
