I'm going to put in a rec here for the Tiffany Aching books, by Terry Pratchett. Most Pratchett protagonists are good but aren't particularly nice, but Tiffany is an 11-year-old girl who goes into Fairyland to retrieve her little brother (who's a bit of a brat) and who almost dies several times and manages to maintain her compassion the whole way through.
