If my body had obliged I would have loved to have had like five or six kids. For me fics where they end up with big loving families is satisfying.
That's just me though, I.know i'm very much in a minority on that one though.

I'm one of 6 kids! It was really fun growing up in a big family, and I always wanted one of my own, but now I think about how expensive it is, and how hard it is (or impossible) to put those kids through college, and I think "One's enough."

Yeah the expense is prohibitive these days! I was a single child and I always desperately wanted siblings. It looked like fun to be a big family. :)

It's not just you; it's me, too. I wanted 4-5 kids, myself, but the way life has gone, I have 0 (and need help caring for myself, so I can't care for a pet much less a child). So I live out my dreams through characters I enjoy.

I feel like it's another type of wishful thinking, along with bookstore (and a bookstore cat) AUs, etc. People can write in a bunch of kids and a happy family and only think about the positive, sweet parts of parenthood with none of the problems.

I usually don't read or write kidfic. Sometimes I hint that it's a future possibility.

Then I wrote one fic where it made sense for the characters to have a big family. I didn't set out to write it. I wanted a cosy setting and found family and slow burn romance. I accidentally created a good environment to raise kids in. Lol.

The ones I've read usually have only children in them, but I don't read too many fics with kids. They're just not my thing.

I get that really eventful (often dangerous) births are done for the drama and character building moments but yeah, I get you on the multiple future kids from that POV. My sister had two difficult pregnancies and the births were no picnic either. She's said to me several times she's done now and one of her fears is falling pregnant again, especially as twins run in her husband's family as well.

My sister had a very difficult birth and her ob out and out told her not to get pregnant again because she could die.

Isn't it common for people to keep having kids even after having an unwanted pregnancy? Look at those 16 & Pregnant/Teen Moms women. Seems like most of the people who have one kids were the ones who wanted a child.

I find them uncomfortable sometimes because I only have one child and would love more, but fertility won't oblige. It could still happen, but it hasn't yet. I know a quite a few people with only one child, and there are so many different reasons for that - general fertility - traumatic pregnancy, traumatic birth, generally not wanting more, money - that are never considered. But then if it is wishful fantasy I get it. I appear to have gone the other way and given most of my original main characters (who have kids) one child like me, if they end up with any.

I know people with lots of kids, and they love it. I don't get why people assume large families must be miserable.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
When did anyone say they were?

Maybe the preponderance of only children in media already?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
How many of the kids in any teen drama is an only child? Sometimes fic fills in gaps.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it's wish fulfillment for some people? Lots of kids without the burden of actually having to pay for them or care for them! (I read a survey saying that most women who wanted kids would like three kids, but reality meant that they didn't often have three.)

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it depends on the fandom but I very rarely see kid fic that gives characters multiple children, unless it's adding on to canonical children.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-24 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I just don't want to see kids in fic, ever, tbh
