But what's weird about it is that there is shading there? They just also left those weird squiggles there, which... if you want to do all your work on one layer, you can, but dear gods why?

I always think it's so they can seem ~artistic~. Like the artists who take photos of their artworks with three pencils or other drawing materials strewn artfully around/on top the picture. Just the digital version of that.

not to sound like some sort of purist or whatever, but can that instagram bullshit just die? I just wanna see the work, not a carefully selected assortments of copics arranged tastefully on top of your work.

I always feel like they try to signal "Yes, I drew this myself, see, these pencils/brushes are proof!" but... Yeah I think it's kinda stupid.

And half the time the art in question isn't lit well enough or isn't in focus for me to actually see the work the artist put into it! Like, I do enjoy knowing what sorts of materials you put into the work, but please, let me actually see the damn work! Bah!

It's an alternative to using watermarks. People don't want to give you a thing they worked hard on with supplies that cost money for free when they're trying to sell prints. Think of them as previews of the thing you could have on your wall if you like the artist and want to support them.

If they're selling it then it totally makes sense, good thinking those guys, I fucking hate seeing reposts where people have cropped out watermarks

If they're not selling it I assume they're copying it off someone else with no idea of the reasoning and just think it looks nifty

Not an artist so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I'd prefer a watermark. Looking at a pic like that it's hard to imagine what the 'finished' product would be, whereas with a watermark it's easy to say, "Yep I'd pay for that."

nah, it's an affectation to imply structure/undersketching but it's integrated clumsily with the rest of the style

As a person who draws sometimes, that thing might be because many times once you finish the lineart and remove the sketch layer from the picture it... looks really bad. It feels like the art loses its soul. At least that's what has happened to me. I still avoid leaving those type of shapes on the finished piece though.

I was wondering if this was a WIP before reading the secret. lol I guess it's stylistic choice? To make it stand out?

All art is subjective and a lot of artists want to develop their own style.

Personaly i find that the squiggles on the skin would be less jarring if it was toned down a bit or if the artist had done the same to the clothing so that it looked a bit more unified.

Honestly, the eyes are killing me the most.
