Tomb Raider 2. I know it has some minor issues (the male gaze stuff in cut scenes) but 12-13 year old me very much wanted Lara's life and I felt a great sense of achievement when I finally completed the game. At one time in my life I knew the levels so much by heart that I could complete the entire thing in a day.

Me too. That Venice boat run!

I know some people see OG Lara as male gazey and I do agree, to an extent. But she was also written with a unique amount of agency for the time, and she inspired me so much. I found so much confidence in emulating her, especially her walk.

Venice was lots of fun, but I remember hours of frustration accidentally blowing myself up trying to complete the final puzzle with the boat!

My favourite level was the Temple of Xian. It scared me half to death, especially the cavern with the giant spiders, but I loved when all the mystical elements really started ramping up. This is probably why I have a soft spot for The Last Revelation as well because it combined archaeology with Egyptian mythology and ghosts etc.

I also liked the monastery level even though the final boss was quite hard to kill the first time!

Despite the fact she was male gazey I think Lara is still a strong enough protagonist in her own right to counter all that. I actually feel like there's way more Millennial women than Millennial men who are still really into those games.
