I do hate the seme/uke dynamic, because I hate the way it warps the characters and affects their interactions in and out of bed. Often, the seme is written as a hyper-masculine over-aggressive brute, and the uke is a weak and weepy fragile wreck. I don’t enjoy either character archetype, so it annoys the shit out of me when characters I like are reduced to those tropes be it in canon sex scenes or fanfic. If the entire canon is written with characters falling into those tropes, then honestly, I probably didn’t like it or the characters enough to engage beyond my initial exposure.

On the other hand, people that prefer to bottom instead of topping are a thing, you know? And vice versa. I think you can write a pairing with those preferences without straying into seme/uke territory. I do love the Untamed and both LWJ and WWX, and while I 100% agree that LWJ = husband and WWX = wife is a disservice to both of them, I don’t mind it when people write LWJ topping most of the time and WWX liking to bottom.

Well, yeah, obviously. Top/bottom isn't the same as seme/uke bullshit, that's a given. It's just really annoying when a canon or fandom turns it into that.

AYRT

Agreed on all counts! I just feel that sometimes top/bottom preferences get conflated with seme/uke dynamics. Like, if the couple isn’t switching all the time, then it’s called out as being seme/uke BS which I don’t think is fair. But entirely agree that it’s infuriating when a canon or fandom takes interesting, nuanced characters and reduces them and their interactions into seme/uke BS.

DA but that's what baffles me in relation to this fandom. Badly written tropy smut extras aside, Wei Wuxian is really far from being a weepy timid uke stereotype.

Right? Nor is Lan Wangji some stoic gruff-n-buff seme trope. They legitimately do have more depth and balance than that.

I mean, I guess LWJ might be that in fanon and fanworks but that's not exactly canon (like... at all).
