Neither is Sirius.

Yes, Sirius immediately after James and Lily's death would not be parent material I agree. I don't agree that at the time of the series he wouldn't have been because he'd matured at that point, but I'm happy to agree to disagree.

I’m glad to disagree. Post-Azkaban Sirius had sterling intentions, but began psychologically crumbling as soon as he didn’t have an immediate life-and-death situation to solve. Not without cause or anything, but he was suicidally reckless and encouraged Harry to be reckless too. If his friends had gotten him therapy instead of locking him in his mother’s house to slowly lose touch with reality, he might have been able to be a good parent someday. As it was, he could barely stand being responsible for himself, let alone for someone who wasn’t really James no matter how much he wanted him to be.

And personally I think at that point Harry was going to be involved anyway and Sirius just wanted him to be prepared whereas Molly wanted to coddle Harry and keep in the dark when she wasn't his mother and had no right to do so. But I do get why lots of people disagree.

No, Sirius didn't know how to care about anyone except in the most reckless goddamn fucking fashion. He was so fucked up from Azkaban that he kept dragging Harry into situations because he didn't like holding still. And it nearly got so many people fucking killed. Harry would have never survived Sirius.

Sirius didn't want him prepared, he wanted the Good Ol' Times back when he and James and Remus would run around school grounds and the forest as animals and get into all kinds of trouble. Sirius was shit at preparation and jumped in feet first, not caring if it was water or fucking acid or who got hurt with him so long as he got to do SOMETHING.
