If it makes you feel better, OP, for the longest time whenever I watched Clue, I thought Wadsworth was telling people that his wife had friends who were 'socialites', not 'socialists', and I never really questioned it until one day I watched with subtitles and was like "Oh! That makes WAY more sense"

So many words we use regularly have really obvious meanings we overlook because we're used to the meaning as a given.
