You expressed it exactly. Not just that, but there's the buildup about how great Camelot's going to be and Arthur's the great awesome king, but it turns out that's BS and he rules for a hot minute and Gwen's the one who actually does any ruling worth a damn?? Then follow Gwen, for Pete's sake, don't waste our time with Arthur.

It was one of those shows that had so much potential and it was obvious they didn't know how to do the reveal, combine it with enough nods to real Arthurian myths and conclude the series in a decent way. They dragged out Arthur being unaware of Merlin for way too long and Morgana (one of my faves at the start) basically turned into cartoon evil. Gwen got sidelined for huge chunks of the story which meant how important she is in the end feel rushed.

Oh, I agree completely. It was messy as hell.

Plus Merlin never actually got to be a great wizard at all, except in secret. No one ever knew about him or went to him for answers, he was always the comic relief as far as anyone else was concerned. I really wish they'd followed through with killing Gaius, just to change the dynamic.

RA

For all the M/M going around in the fandom (I did not participate, though I was partial to Lancelot and Gawain, not together, just for me to swoon over lol), I came out of it thinking Morgana and Morgane had 109% chemistry. I was even shipping them! In my head! And then I found out they were supposed to be sisters woops lol

Oh man, I agree completely. Morgana/Morgause was really interesting and pretty hot tbh but alas sisters.

I always felt like part of the problem with Merlin was the showrunners had decided right from the start that the reveal would happen in the final episode but didn't plot out anything else as far as a series arc. So then what happened was the story went in a direction where it stopped making sense fairly early on for Merlin to keep hiding things but the people in charge just were not willing to pivot from their predetermined ending and the show suffered for it.
