Re: Satisfying/Unsatisfying Endings

As much as the last season sucked, I'm surprised how much I enjoyed the series finale for Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Hercules and Iolaus just go off into the sunset and continue on their journey, presumably to fight more monsters and baddies. That's it. That was the end and somehow it just really worked and was in line with their characterization. The finale was simply another day for them, one of countless had and one of countless more.

Yu Yu Hakusho's ending made perfect sense in relation to the story but was not at all what I had really hoped for. It's been decades and I still resent that Raizen was killed off AND pretty much forgotten by most of the fandom on account that he was only around for a few episodes. Would have LOVED a full season of him training and preparing Yusuke to take over his kingdom and united the spirit and human realms together. So much wasted potential, oh my fucking god.

I wasn't particularly fond of Black Rain's ending, although it is still one of my favorite films ever. The ending drags out over multiple scenes and I personally would have preferred a less clean resolution, perhaps even a fade-to-black when Nick corners Sato, allowing the audience to decide whether or not he was able to restrain himself from killing his best friend and partner's murderer.

I loved the Hercules finale too, for the same reason. I just really enjoyed that it was simply another day and we know the journey continues on, with Hercules and Iolaus hanging out being friends and doing good together even if we're not watching their adventures anymore.

And honestly I wish Xena had done the same because that ending was unsatisfying crap.

AYRT

I don't know if I watched the last episode of the Legendary Journeys, (I probably did, 15 years ago lol) but that is such a satisfying ending. It also happens to be the type of ending that leaves my heart clawing for more, but I know that the journeys don't end, and I really like that. The book I'm referring to, Gods of Jade and Shadow ends on a similar note-- the heroine is going off to live the adventure, the life, she never could have imagined for herself, and the character she embarks this part of her journey still has connections with her love interest, so there's the implication that maybe she'll see him again. She will. And she too rides off into the sunset, but in a stolen car lol

Doing acre watch of YYH

I agree with you on YYH's ending. It was nice and how the anime ended was cute (can't remember if it ended the same way in the manga with all them splashing around in the ocean), but it would've been nice to see a little more of Raizen.
