I actually didn't mind Free! that much in this regard even though the baiting is really gratuitous, because enough of the series was genuinely about the characters relationships to each other that it felt like I wasn't investing feelings in nothing. I don't think that changes that it's baiting, it just changes my ability to enjoy it.

I did watch it quite some time ago though, and don't know if it would hold up now that I have higher standards for actually wanting to see real gay representation, lol.
