Do you stay in the fandom even after you've lost interest in the new canon stuff?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's say that you quit watching a certain show after season 2 and it's still going on several seasons later. Do you still lurk or participate in the fandom?

And related: do you stay in the fandom even after there's nothing new coming out ever again?

Still love the first 3 seasons of House even though the rest sucked and will read good fanfic if I can find it, if that's what you mean.

Yeah, I still read fanfic and such for it. As evidenced by me occasionally getting the urge to read SPN fanfic even though I stopped watching years ago.

For videogames, yes. If a franchise has one good game but I either didn't enjoy the other games or simply haven't played them, I'll still participate in the fandom. For TV shows, hard pass though; if I quit watching something, it is very likely because I didn't enjoy the show altogether and thus have no reason to be in the fandom.

Most of my fandoms have been dead for years, if not decades, so yes, I definitely stick around even if nothing new has come out for it. Ah ha~

Yes and yes.

I usually like the early seasons of a show the best. Before they start killing characters off for drama or they jump the shark plot-wise.

If it gets that bad I stop watching and just ignore everything after that point. If the fandom is big enough I usually find other people who feel the same and we write and read AUs and canon divergence stuff and laugh together over how terrible the later seasons are.

I think most of my fandoms are "over" in the sense that there's nothing new planned. I actually prefer it that way. I don't enjoy everyone complaining about the latest episode or arguing over whether their ships will become canon or not.

Yes, I did, for several years. Canon had undergone changes and I lost interest but I liked the fandom community and the old stuff they'd put out.

Depends on favorite characters tbh. There's been a lot of fandoms where I've fallen out of love with the series or just had enough of fandom's bullshit and no longer want to deal with to the point where I don't want to see the canon any more - but if I have a favorite character that I really like, I'll probably check in once in a while to see how they're doing and still continue to make fan works about them too.

If I stop watching a show while it's still running then it couples with me loosing interest in the characters and setting itself, so no, I don't stay in the fandoms in those cases, I say goodbye and move on.

If I've watched something to the end however then yes, I'll still be in the fandom. There's more than a handful of shows/movies where I still check-out the fic for specific ships because I didn't fall out of love with the canon, it just ended, but I'm still invested in the story and love the characters.

Yes, definitely. For instance, I hated 3x01 of Sherlock so much I didn't even bother watching a single episode after that, but I stayed in the fandom until 2017.

Honestly, the older I get, the more canon is just the spark that starts the fire for me.

Nah, sorry. Not usually. If I lose interest, it's usually because it got really bad and I can't separate that from my feelings about the fandom.

But closed canon fandom's are more enjoyable to me than ongoing ones.

Nope, I'll cut it loose.

Nah. I dropped Bleach and Naruto like hot potatoes after they stopped being interesting to me and also skipped out of the respective fandoms (though I went back briefly to watch the implosion when the official pairings were revealed). I also dropped Inuyasha because too much time (for me) had passed between the last episode I saw and the beginning of the final arc and it just wasn't the same anymore.

Lol yup. I’m still writing Naruto fic despite hating everything after the whole Asuma vengeance arc and never having checked out Boruto at all.

I just mark my fic as AU and do what I want with the canon I love.

I'll probably be a Trekkie until I die. And I'll probably re-read Lord of the Rings as long as I'm able. But I don't have to be into each and every new product.
