tbh I've always assumed that highschool AUs are largely written by highschoolers themselves. Not saying that no other age group would do that, but depending on fandoms that has been my experience so far (also when I first got into fandom I pretty much did that too when writing fics as a teen)
Now quality just depends on the writers - there are a few I've absolutely loved, but because it's one of the most popular AUs to write then yeah there's a lot of bad/boring ones to wade through to find them.

Interesting. In my experience, they're adults 'fixing' their terrible teenage years by writing the high school they wished they'd experienced with their fave characters.

Definitely true. If an author is good enough they can make anything work, but then I highly doubt they only restrict themselves to writing /only/ these AUs;;

It's mostly the combination of the two (Modern/highschool/uni AUs) that give me the most grief. There can be some great one's individually and combined, but I've seen absolutely zilch if these in a number of fandoms I've been skipping through these last few years.
