There are admittedly many highschool AU's that I found genuinely amazing. Some that even shared the Modern AU side of things.

My main focus on the secret was the "only". As in people who /only/ write modern highschool/uni AU's were particularly lacking on talent in said directions. Those types of AU's tend to erase some if not most of the identity of the characters written, and more often than not, it ends in failure. If you only write these AU's, then chances are, you're trying to relive/(more likely)fix personal past experiences and are using various characters to fix out those life experiences. Which is just bad writing most of the time, imo.
