That's most of my issue with high school AU's as well. Though I agree not all of them are bad, some are damn great I have to say.

When I mentioned laziness I mostly meant that towards the Modern AU portion of things. That when writing about a characters who existed in the eighties for example- the people who can't be bothered doing even minimal research. They live in the same country as the characters, same systems, they just don't care.
There are a lot of Modern AU's that exist only to omit the five minutes of factchecking that could easily make it canon era. It's ridiculous, and imo, lazy. After all, if you're writing about a specific character you write about them- which includes who they are and why, where they come from, and how that affects them.

I mean if you want to write for yourself for fun for free that's fine. But if you're actually intending to write about a specific character you gotta get it right. Otherwise don't tag original work as fanfiction.
