It's like super rare that I've ever seen them done well and that was when people actually seemed to care about the characters they wrote about;;
Depending on the fandom it differentiates drastically, but as of late I have seen like zero decent fics that are modern/highschool AU's.

I legitimately am so bitter about this because AU's are some of my favourite places to put my fave characters into, but it seems like it's gone from fanfic to pseudo fantasy fic where the author just writes themselves as the character rather than the character as they are.
