107. One of the couples posted there did not mean to have eight children, they had twins, and then on the next time around they got sextuplets, so you know it wasn't like they were trying to have a baby farm or anything.

The Duggars are another, but honestly I don't think there is anything one can do about it, I don't want to tell people you can only have this number of children, it is a thorny issue. And my mom came from a family of 11 and she was towards the end and so I was glad that my mom's family was not castigated or ostracized.

The Duggars are castigated because they are Quiverfull. The Quiverfrell movement believes that women shouldn't have any job outside the home and that their sole purpose in life is to be broodmare and walking incubator

Um I know, and I don't support the movement, and I find that attitude sickening and sexist, but the secret wasn't talking about that one movement, it was talking about all large families, as if large families are all produced from the same piece of cloth.

Honestly in the case of the Duggars that kind of thing is perpetuated because they are closed off from the outside world, outside of their own movement and a willful lack of education.

And honestly, I think the Duggars are victims of the movement, but you can't force them to stop or change.

But at the same time the solution is not dehumanize them or insult her as some kind of babymaking machine, because then you are just buying into that.

Honestly? It's freedom of choice. Being female myself, I would completely lose my mind if I was told that I couldn't have a job outside the home and my only job was to be BabyMaker Extraordinaire, but if that's what she wants to do, then no one has the right to tell her otherwise or treat her as lesser because she wants/believes in that. Saying that she should be castigated because of it makes you no better than those who attack women who have abortions.

Freedom of choice doesn't only extend to "normal" choices. It's her decision, not yours, not society's.

But you know, as population pressures start to build, those choices will, by necessity be taken away from people, it's just the reality for the future (unless there is a major plague or a war that wipes out a lot of the population).

People got to realise that having children is no longer just a choice, but has consequences for the planet and the society they live in, every child is sucking up finite resources, and nobody in the first world who has access to birth control can be ignorant of this.
