107. You know, in theory I'm all for small families and creeped out by people who can keep having huge ones despite knowing how fucked up the world is by overpopulation...but in practice, there's something about the language people use to condemn people with large families that creeps me out. It's alternately dehumanizing ("litters"), misogynistic ("she thinks her vagina is a clown car lololol"), or both.

111. ...sob. I usually wait to get video games, but I picked up Persona 4 today in hopes of avoiding spoilers.

134. I actually haven't tried to read Hetalia, because I don't really like the art style and something about the way the concept is handled turns me off, but I feel like I'm kind of in the same boat. I love anthropomorphic personifications. I wish Hetalia was more interesting to me.

141. Oh my God. Do we need a PSA already?

159. So enjoying a cheesy and stereotypical show makes you a bad fan now? Whatever.

(Also, I don't care how vapid it is, the art looks pretty.)

161. Gurren Lagann is totally about dicks. I don't care if they picked drills "just because it looked cool," there's enough other phallic stuff in there that I cannot believe there's not at least a little subconscious penis-worship going on.

That said...

It's still pretty meaningful once you get past the lolololcocks. But, you know, not everyone wants to get past the lolololcocks. Just don't rag on those of us who do.

167. I've been a hardcore Sweeney Todd fan for years, and I had no idea Pirelli was supposed to be played by a woman.

Oh yes thank you, that is exactly it. The criticism to me is worse because it is just insulting and tells me things about people that I just didn't want to know.

Ah, okay; when I saw Sweeney Todd a few years back, it was in a very limited-run appearance at the New York Opera, not the 2005 revival.

And yeah, Sacha Baron-Cohen was one of the movie's better choices.

You've pretty much nailed it. I support small families. I think people ought to have them; I think it's generally healthier for the planet, healthier for the mother, and healthier for the children, who can't possibly be getting enough attention. I often criticize the theory of having lots of children, and I definitely criticize religious groups that advocate it. However that doesn't mean people who make choices I disagree with deserve to be belittled, dehumanized and demeaned for them.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2008-12-26 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that it's not right to dehumanize someone for making a poor choice, but I do believe people that publicly parade their poor decisions and even exploit them for money deserve to be criticized.

Re: 107

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-12-26 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Criticized yes, demeaned? No. And equating a woman with a clown car or a group of children as a litter is a measure to demean to dehumanize, not criticize.

Re: 107

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2008-12-26 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't say it couldn't be criticized. But that's not what I'm commenting on. I might point out that I doubt they believe they've made poor decisions, even though I think their choices are terrible. Comparing a woman's vagina to a clown car, referring to the children as litters, and other similar tactics are not valid criticisms though.

What I would criticize even more than that (and have, and do, on occasion) are the networks, the producers, the families themselves, etc, who try to capitalize on this, and indeed, in many cases to sell it and legitimize it. It's disgusting a couple of times over, in my mind, to make a television show about it.

Re: 107

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. There's a difference between criticism ("I'm uncomfortable with people having many children because of the effect on both the children and the environment") and dehumanization ("quit having your stupid litters, breeders, can't you see that your vagina isn't a clown car?!").

[identity profile] doctor-dorothy.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan of the Quiverfull movement, by any means, but I do get a little tired of people thinking that the average, small North American family is the only healthy option, and that large families "can't possibly be getting enough attention." Umm, exactly how much attention is the exact, right amount of attention? Quite frankly, and I'm definitely biased because I come from a large family, I've often found the small, nuclear family to be a sincerely fucked up model. Sometimes too much familial surveillance makes for seriously weird and unhappy people. As well? Just because a family is small doesn't mean it's consuming less, so the environmental argument is bullshit.

Re: 107

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Then you're clearly welcome to disagree. I never advocated a small American family model--I think there's plenty screwed up about that, too. I don't think there's a particular platonic ideal form of "family" and any loving family is better than an abusive family or no family at all. However, in my experience, and in my opinion, once older children have to raise younger children (raise, not babysit, not keep an eye on, not help out with, but raise) more than the parents, there's a problem. I also think that as a society, as opposed to as individuals, there's probably a problem with reproducing at above a replacement rate unless we really start rethinking how we approach city planning and resource management.

Critique toward over-consumption is, I think, pretty fair toward American culture in general.

RE 159

(Anonymous) 2008-12-26 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuri fans like to pretend they're on some sort of high ground when it comes to fandom. "Well, at least we're not rabid like those yaoi people." and "Yuri is about more than sex!" or "Yuri is higher quality/better written/drawn/whatever than yaoi." Candyboy just proves that yuri fans will just as willingly jump on whatever gets shat down the pipe and love it no matter how crappy and trite it is.

Love the art if you want, but it still has all the substance of a jellyfish.

Re: RE 159

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I have never, ever seen anyone claim that yuri anime/manga is higher quality/better written/drawn than yaoi. To the contrary, every yuri fan I know is aware that most of the outright, non-subtextual yuri and shoujo-ai out there is terrible, and if they love it anyway, it's generally as a guilty pleasure.

What I do see is a certain relief in the fact that yuri fangirls (not necessarily yuri fanboys) are less likely to bash female characters (for obvious reasons) and more likely to pay attention to them rather than obsessing over the boys. There may also be some belief that yuri fangirls are less "rabid" than yaoi fangirls, and that may or may not be true, I don't spend enough time around yaoi fangirls to know, but whether it is or it isn't, I cannot wrap my brain around how the quality of yuri vs. yaoi has anything to do with the rabidity of its fans. What?

Anyway, my point is, the solidarity in yuri fandom has nothing to do with the quality of its official materials, and I am pretty baffled by the idea that the crappiness of a lot of shoujo-ai anime proves anything other than...that a lot of shoujo-ai anime is crappy. It's nothing new, either. Kannazuki No Miko's been around for years, you know.

I completely agree.
It's also mind-boggling when the people who make those horrible, demeaning comments claim to be pro-choice. Really? Really? Ugh.
