...Isn't it their decision to have as many kids as they want? Yeah, making a TV show out of it is stupid. But if people like kids and want to have a lot of them, that's their choice, just like if people don't like kids and don't want to have any, that is also their choice. I thought we liked giving people choices.

choices are bad if they're ~~weird~~ or based on ~~religion~~.

Yeah, I only think it's bad depending on how the families handle having so many children. I wouldn't even give a shit about a family having 18 kids if they managed to do it well and healthily. Unfortunately, it seems that the Duggars, um. Don't. To say the least.

I get a little creeped out by the idea of all the girls in that family being raised to believe that they should be nothing but baby machines, much less the fact that that they are basically just shoving off the younger kids onto the older ones to take care of them at this point. It's fully possible for a large family to give attention and affection to all their children, but it's way too obvious that's not even in the Duggers game plan.

This THEY SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED thing really annoys me, though. Adoption is often a choice, and may even be a better one than adding more children to the planet while some are in need of families and love already, but we don't really get to say "DON'T HAVE YOUR OWN BABIES YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED."

Yeah, I do agree with that. That family scares me slightly, from what I've heard of them. But implying that people shouldn't be allowed to have children if they want is ridiculous, and just... way too controlling. Choices are good things. People need to be allowed to make their own choices, and it's when they are restricted from doing so that freedom begins to die.

Yeah, definitely. It's not the fact that they're having many children that makes parents good or bad, it's how they handle the situation and how they raise the kids. I'm sure there have been plenty of families with 8+ kids in them throughout history that have done as good or better a job than families with three or fewer children... especially when you realize that bad parents are bad parents regardless of how many kids they have, so the idea that we should immediately ostracize all big families, just because they're big and not because of the family dynamic, is really unsettling.

Also, the OVERPOPULATION!!! card worries me. Not because overpopulation isn't a threat, but because it seems like way, way too many people are choosing the Band-Aid solution -- a short term, "OMG STOP HAVING KIDS" approach when what's really needed is for humanity to address the root problems, which are resources and human consumption. Way more important than limiting the occasional family from having a lot of kids would be actually working on reusable resouces, cheap alternate energy, and changing our own society and even physiology so that we no longer need to consume nearly as much as we do now.
