107. the world isn't "massively overpopulated." there is plenty of space for everyone and most countries are reproducing below replacement rate. put down The Popuation Bomb and do some research. and Jesus Christ, you people have been whining about overpopulation for 200 years. just shutup. it's not a problem.

Right, because overpopulation is all about not having space and people winding stacked on top of each other. It couldn't be about, oh, running out of resources and going through a Malthusian population crash that destroys technological society. Nope. Everything's fine. Only stupid lefty hippies worry about the fact that we live in a world with limited resources. Smart conservatives who've escaped the brainwashing know that there's a magical fairyland beneath the earth that will give us ~all the resources we need~ if only those stupid liberals would shut up.

Thomas Malthus is a joke. and so are you. another term for your "magical fairyland" is called high-yield farming.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-27 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, so you uh...seriously believe that we live in a world with unlimited resources.

Environmentalists are annoying, but anti-environmentalists are fucking scary.

[identity profile] bullet4fob.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
i think that high-yield farming can sustain the earth's population and that farming technology will continue to improve which is true and has been true since The Green Revolution. btw, that is not synonymous with believing that resources are, as you say, unlimited, but whatever. not a single thing that Malthus or any neo-Malthusian has ever predicted has come to fruition. that my use of empirical evidence is "fucking scary" to you cracks me up. hopefully, you surround yourself with idiots so that you aren't perpetually terrified.

Honestly overpopulation will have more to do with the fact that people are living longer. People don't die as fast as they used to so the planet has to sustain them longer. It isn't just or even mostly about people having babies.

It is a complicated issue and is actually not at the fault of the people like Duggars.

Okay, while I do agree that we have an overpopulation problem and limited resources... why is it that a huge ton of people leap on the "OMG STOP REPRODUCING NOW" bandwagon instead of thinking that the answer might lie in coming up with cheap, viable, alternate forms of energy and other resources, making it so that we ourselves no longer need to consume so many resources, and other things that actually solve the base problem instead of making a temporary "solution"?

Big families contribute to the problem, sure, but only to the extent that every person alive compounds how many resources are being used. But they won't spell the doom of humanity if that does come about. That'll come if humanity sits on its collective ass and does nothing to come up with ways to adapt and save ourselves -- all of us, including the "extra" kids in large families that contribute to overpopulation.

[identity profile] saeva.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
Here's the thing: you can stop having babies right now. You can adopt now (though there's a basic, serious need for adoption reform, yes). These are immediate measures that can be taken.

Developing, installing, and educating people about the technology that will allow our world to continue sustaining us will take time, effort, and money. It will take cooperation, which means winning cooperation -- both in the backrooms of unofficial, undocumented political agreements and in the media, the classroom, the workplace, etc. where there's a need of convincing the populations that are hogging resources to step back and share. That is the difficult, slow part that will come in halting, protested steps.

It's nowhere as simple as "stop having so many kids!"

I love seeing what crazy shit you'll come up with next. You never fail to disappoint. Keep on bringing the lulz!
