107. Agreed about 17 Kids and Counting, since that bullshit family is the direct result of IF GAWD WANTS US TO HAVE CHILDREN THEN WE WILL~ but you might want to actually do... any research at all into Jon and Kate before you get up on your high horse because they happen to have a lot of kids. They tried having one baby -- they had twins. They decided to try to have one more baby -- which would make a total of THREE, might I add? -- and had sextuplets, and decided not to, you know. Randomly kill them just because they weren't what she wanted. I highly doubt they'll be trying to have any more children.

134. It might be the setup. It doesn't bore me, I just can't pay attention to it for more than a few strips at a time -- I think because of the format of it? I seem to have a problem paying attention to comic strip formatted mangas unless I'm holding an actual compilation in my hands, haha. ;; Maybe you'll have better luck with the anime, and/or when volumes start being published!

146. I cannot even respond to this without getting irrationally angry. But not with you, OP. Carry on. (:

170. Ditto this one.

Mother of sextuplets faces loss of Medicaid-funded nurse

WYOMISSING - A Berks County woman with year-old sextuplets and 4-year-old twins will appeal for continued nursing help from Medicaid beyond a one-year cutoff.

Kate Gosselin, whose husband has a 90-minute commute to a state job in Harrisburg, said she cannot safely manage eight small children.

The sextuplets - only the second set born in Pennsylvania and among fewer than 30 sets born worldwide - arrived 8 weeks premature but are thriving as they near their first birthday Tuesday.

"I will shout from the highest mountain that these are my children and I love them and I need help," Kate Gosselin said.

While the Gosselins appreciate the volunteers who streamed through their home in the early months, the children's routines improved with the arrival of Angie Krall, a licensed practical nurse who spends 30 hours a week with the family. Medicaid provides the temporary nursing support for premature babies, Gosselin said.

"She's fine-tuned and I trust her," Kate Gosselin said of the nurse, Angie Krall. "She's as good as a parent in this home."

The family cannot afford to pay Krall on their own, she said. Jonathan Gosselin, an information technology specialist who now works in the Gov.'s Office, was unemployed for much of last year.

Kate Gosselin said she feels society has a responsibility to help with the children, since modern medicine promotes the use of fertility drugs, which can lead to multiple births.

She has talked by telephone with Bobbi McCaughey, the Carlisle, Iowa, woman who delivered the world's only set of surviving septuplets in November 1997. McCaughey named the loss of privacy and the oversight of volunteers as among her biggest difficulties, Kate Gosselin said.

On the bright side, the Gosselin babies seem to have skirted the health problems that can plague premature babies and multiples. Each now weighs between 18 and 22 pounds.

"I look at six healthy babies and I feel a lot better, because it could be a lot, lot worse," Jonathan Gosselin said.

yeah, I did, yours didn't help your case much, thanks

Kate Gosselin, whose husband has a 90-minute commute to a state job in Harrisburg, said she cannot safely manage eight small children.

Whiiiich pretty much says she wasn't expecting sextuplets. Since, you know. It'd be fucking retarded to go "TEE HEE I WANT SOOOO MANY MOAR BABIES \O_o/" and then go "omgomgomg bwahhh I can't take care of thiiiis many kids!"

And your, uh, bolded bit? Isn't saying "OMG WE TRIED FOR MULTIPLE BIRTHS." Yes, they were most likely aware that the procedure they tried had a chance of multiple births. But, you know, it also has a chance of only one taking. A slightly less chance of two taking. Less of a chance than that for three. And almost no chance at all that all six eggs that were fertilized would actually take. If the option was between "I CAN'T HAVE BABIES WITHOUT MEDICAL HELP" and "THIS MEDICAL PROCEDURE CARRIES A RISK OF HAVING MORE THAN ONE CHILD," I can easily see her taking the risk. There was a good chance of her having twins -- leaving her with only four kids, which would have been more than they were planning, but still managable. There was NOT a good risk of her having sextuplets.

What she was pretty obviously saying with her quote there? Is since because medicine encourages using fertility drugs to help people get pregnant, and fertility drugs CAN LEAD to multiple births -- CAN, not WILL, as in THERE IS A RISK -- society (by which I assume she means the government, because it... is in line with modern medicine promoting fertility drugs? idk her exact logic there, and may not agree with it, but that's not the point here) should be obligated to help when the result IS a number of children that the parents weren't expecting and don't have the means to properly care for by themselves.

Basically, you just copypasted an article stating that Kate Gosselin wasn't expecting to have sextuplets, trying to prove that... apparently she was trying to have a ton of kids? Well, whatever. The reason they fertilized six eggs was because if they fertilized fewer, the odds of even ONE resulting in a child would have been too low. It's completely safe to say that the Gosselins were expecting one child, were prepared for maybe twins, maybe triplets on an outside chance -- not all six friggin' babies.

Maybe I should put a little addendum on my "do research" comment up there: learn to use reading comprehension when and if you actually do research. Sorry, but someone getting what was a slim possibility but she didn't bargain for is not the same thing as churning out kids, and I still say the OP is a dick for referring to HUMAN BEINGS as "litters" and saying they should be ostracized from society for having large families. Even if she'd wanted eight kids? That would remain utterly fucking uncalled for.

Not saying she's a great mother. From what I've heard, though this is just total hearsay, there's a lot of people saying that she's pretty hateful towards her kids and husband and it's not a good family situation. That has everything to do with HER, not the number of people in the family. I've never been trying to defend her parenting, just the fact that she's had a total of two pregnancies and people are calling that disgusting and seeming to think she wanted a huge mass of babies, when I'm pretty sure no sane woman wants to shove six babies out of their uterus one right after the other holy shit ow.

Yes, because she has no free will or brain and modern medicine totally brainwashed her into fertility treatment, zomg. Seriously, if you reimplant 6 embryos you accept the risk they will all take. That's the decision you have to make. If you only have one or two embryos implanted, then yes, there's a higher probability you won't conceive, but you know what? If you're that fricking desperate, go round again - another cycle.

She had kids, it was an entirely selfish decision to go for more, and another calculated decision to choose to have all six embryos implanted. The consequences are hers, not the states and no one should have to pay for them but her family. So I don't at all agree with the awwww, she only wanted ONE MORE, sympathy card, because she went in there with her eyes open.

JMO, you are, of course, entitled to think whatever you think. Just be grateful I'm sparing you my thoughts on yaoi IVF in general. :)

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
See, I see your reasoning here, and I do agree with you -- she went in knowing the risks. But I think you overestimate the risks, here. There was a very, very, very statistically low risk that all six embryos would take. And yeah, she had to accept that risk. And I'm not certain about this, so don't quote me, but it seems to me that only having one or two embryos implanted, having that fail, and having to try repeatedly until it works would be far, far more expensive than just making a shot where the doctors tell you "there's a chance you might have more than one baby, but almost no chance all of them will take."

As I said, I'm totally not agreeing with her as to whether anyone else should help support her children. I'm just annoyed by the fact that anon was using that quote to try to say that she was planning to have a ton of kids, when that little article really does say the opposite. Yeah, she knew the risks, but it isn't the same thing as an active effort to have a ton of kids. It wasn't something that should have been inconceivable to her and her husband, but it certainly wouldn't be something expected either -- same as having sex while on the pill and/or wearing a condom, there is a small chance of getting pregnant, but even when you know there's that chance, you certainly wouldn't be expecting it if it happened.

I do still think it's different from choosing to pop out kid after kid like a baby-making machine. 8| But that's not to say it was a totally brilliant choice, either, just that the odds were low and, while they do need to step up now that it's happened, they weren't trying for a crapton of children.

==================================================

Yeah, well society didn't force you to use fertility drugs, so suck it up and take responsibility for your own children.
