Abortions exist for a reason

And you believe that reason is as a contraceptive? "Whoops, didn't want that, better get rid of it, tee hee!"

No. I'm entirely pro-choice, and you know what? THE MOTHER MADE A CHOICE. And that choice was to own up to what happened, the consequences of having sex, and not have an abortion just because she wasn't expecting and wasn't happy with the outcome. That is infinitely more mature than anyone who chooses to use abortion as a form of birth control any day.

So when you say you're entirely pro-choice you mean you're actually what would be called pro-life. Pregnancy=consequence of sex and so must come to term. Because I don't see how anybody could describe this situation as a form of birth control. When you're carrying 6 children it's often a safety measure for a healthy birth.

Um, no. I'm saying that the people saying "SHE SHOULD HAVE CHOSEN TO ABORT ONE >O" when she chose not to are being ridiculous.

I'm also not saying that someone should NOT BE ALLOWED OMG to have an abortion and that the pregnancy MUST come to term once they're pregnant. Even if it is being used as a form of birth control. But I do reserve the right to think that using abortions as birth control isn't a mature reaction at all. There are definite exceptions, of course, but in the case of a woman actively trying to have one baby, winding up with more than one, and then deciding to get an abortion because it wasn't what she had expected, I reserve the right to think that it's an immature reaction and the mature choice would be to own up to it -- put some of them up for adoption if you're unable to support them, etcetera.

But at the same time, immature or not, I'm not about to look down on someone who chooses to get an abortion because they didn't want to get pregnant. My reply was phrased harshly not out of being pissy towards that idea, though again there are more mature ways to deal with it. But people are immature creatures, and that doesn't make them bad people. What pisses me off is the anons going "OMG SHE SHOULD HAVE HAD AN ABORTION, THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE FOR, SHE'S HORRIBLE FOR NOT DOING SO" when the lady made her choice. If she'd chosen to have an abortion, that would have been her choice too -- but as it is, other people are trying to say what her choice SHOULD HAVE BEEN, and that's incredibly irritating. I'm sorry I didn't express myself more clearly.

When you're carrying 6 children it's often a safety measure for a healthy birth.

And then again, it's also not. Not always. If, again, she had chosen to have an abortion of of safety or health concerns, that definitely might have been a good idea. However, if the doctors were saying there were no complications -- and, as everyone can see now, there weren't and she did give birth to six healthy children without being hurt herself -- and she chose not to get an abortion, that was still her choice. As it would have been her choice if they'd said "there is a risk of complications" and she'd decided to try going through with it anyway. At any point in the pregnancy, if there started to be a danger, she would have still had the option to terminate (at least one of the fetuses) in order to make sure she and/or the other children weren't put in danger... and the option not to.

The thing I really have a problem with here is the people going "LOL bitch should've had an abortion" as if they have any right to make that choice for her. They don't, any more than anyone has a right to tell a woman that she's not allowed to have an abortion. She chose not to. And that's perfectly fine.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-27 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ah--okay, I understand now. And ITA. The idea that she *must* terminate at least one of her pregnancies is just as wrong as the idea that she shouldn't be allowed to have the children at all. Her choice all the way--and not surprising that she wouldn't choose to do that after struggling to get pregnancy. She did all this knowing the potential consequences, and she probably decided early on that she'd carry to term any fetuses she conceived.

What's so immature about an abortion as birth control?

Just because there is an unintended consequence to your action, it doesn't mean you have to follow it through. If I accidentally offend someone I don't throw in a couple more offensive statements to drive the point home, I try and correct this unintended consequence. Does that make me immature?

And just to clarify, I'm not trying to dispute her choice, even though I actually think it was an ignorant and, actually, an immature one. Perhaps she should have aborted the children, seeing as we're living in an over-populated world with rapidly diminishing resources, but I would never deny her this choice.
