I don't think the writing has really changed much from S3 and there's still the question of Ruby's motives in wanting Sam to use his powers but it's no longer a central theme.
Ruby's motives no longer being a central theme was what I was referring to when I said they were no longer in "high debate". I place more emphasis of Ruby's lack of independent action as a detracting change. Allusions to Ruby's actions away from the Winchesters would be appreciated on my part: they give the character more dimension than "Winchester demon pal / love interest".
I'm not saying there needs to be heavy screen time dedicated to it but a hint here and there would really add a lot. It raises questions and interest in the character. A lot of Ruby's appeal for me is that what you see is not necessarily what you get. Yet in season four they're showing us an awful lot of Ruby but not planting those hints that make us wonder about what we're seeing.
Plus, Katie Cassidy did the role so well it'd be hard for anyone to live up to her portrayal.
Very true. Cassidy defined the role of Ruby. Also, sorry I didn't mean to ramble. I'm sure I'll regret half of what I said in a moment or two.

I hope I'm not spoiling you and we just interpreted it differently, but I think the places Ruby, as a character, went in the last episode of the half season were perfect for GC to bring it and she... kinda, almost did. She was better than she was the rest of the season. But to compare, Jim Beaver, who plays Bobby, always brings it, even though there's usually less conflict surrounding him and most of the time he's just a convenient exposititory device.
It works out then that you either have to argue that ALL the writing on Supernatural sucks (which I've seen ) or, more commonly, that all the writing of women on Supernatural sucks, which I think says less about the show than the person saying it (not to excuse the show but I think we have good evidence that's not true in characters like Jo, Bela, Ruby I, Ellen, even Mary [young] and Mary [old].) Of course, people who argue that sometimes argue that, yes, all those characters sucked in which case... how do you even respond to that? Because they're definitely not watching the same show as I am.
Edit: What I can say for GC is that she was well cast as a protagonist of an ABC Family production but this, Supernatural, isn't ABC Family.
