I find all Studio Ghibli films pretty and a little huh? on plot.

The war was over the missing prince who was turnip head all along if you didn't catch it. Obviously when he's not a turnip on a stick anymore he can just go home and tell them he's not missing.

I like the book too, but it's easier to think about them as different stories. The film is inspired by the book more than based on it, I'd say.

I love the film to bits but the closer i look at it the more i realise that i love it for it's aesthetic and it's premise and not for the story it tries to tell.

The entire last act is so incredibly weak. It's a genuine shame and I'd love to know why they made the choices they did.

Hard same to this.

Pretty much same.

I do like aspects of the story. I like the potential. I LOVE certain interactions.

But... the last act does fall apart and get rushed super quickly.

Love this movie, was a bit meh on the book tbh. Still have no idea why there's a war. I wish I'd liked the book better but it came off as pretty twee for me.

I remember seeing this in the theater and found the movie very beautiful and serious... up until when the scarecrow turns into the prince and is all "I'm the lost prince!" and I laughed out loud because WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU?

...They explain that, though. The war was because the prince was missing, the prince was missing because he'd run into a witch who'd cast a curse on him, it ended on a whim because the prince... Came back. Thus the reason for the war was ended.

They explain it in what feels like a throwaway line spoken by a background extra near the very beginning. It's easy to miss or forget about.
