I, myself, generally connect with one character in each canon and then ship them with a few others (not with everyone, though, since I, too, have specific character dynamics that I like). But I like gen also, as long as the character I connect with is a significant part of it. Every once in a great while, especially if the canon has a huge cast, I can connect with another character and do the same thing.

Sounds like what you like and what I like are on very similar wavelengths, anon. Neat to hear that someone else out there interacts with fandom close to the same way I do. i.e.: my enjoyment of fanworks for a given fandom is based primarily on the significant presence of my favourite character in that fandom, followed by the particular shipping dynamics. I don’t usually get invested enough in other characters to read anything focusing on them.

Yeah, I can like other characters and even be interested in their canon storylines, but I don't go looking for anything outside that that focuses on them.
