A long series of characters brought out of the closet as diversity publicity only to be fridged, canceled, written out of series, walked back as "really" straight, inconsistently written, or limited to an edgier parallel universe. I think the only LGBTQ character whose been reasonably consistent over this period is Mystique, but she's consistently the sexy evil bi babe. Also the catch 22 where titles with LGBTQ characters were under-promoted and then dropped due to low sales, and hard limits on how LGBTQ issues would be explored in movies and TV.

And the editors in chief were quite honest that these decisions were based on brand identity, which turned out to be almost as much a driver of corporate self-censorship as the CCA.
