Nayrt - or, wild radical notion here, we can blame both! Men who assault and murder women = bad! Women who increase the risk of violence against other women = also bad!
I hope I haven't rocked your tiny world too hard with that information. I understand if you need some time to process.

How is Rowling increasing the risk of violence? The men who attack trans women do it because they’re grossed out, not because they’re radical feminists

It's normalizing a general disdain and distrust of trans women, who only want to be accepted. Trying to pretend she has no influence when she has millions of followers is just being willfully obtuse.

As much as I doubt this is a good faith question, in case anyone was genuinely wondering, when someone with an enormous platform talks about how trans women aren't real women, when they use that platform to boost the voices of others who call for violence against trans women, that increases the fucking risk of violence against trans women.

Rowling using her platform to talk shit about a marginalized group lets people watching her and seeing who comes to her defense feel safe in acting out violently.

And there's no one singular reason why trans women are attacked, by anyone-- there are men who react violently because of disgust or shame-over-lack-of-disgust when they discover a woman is trans. But the men, the actual men who sometimes storm into women's restrooms to pull out women who they don't think look feminine enough, also claim to be acting out of a paternalistic desire to protect "real" women-- and the women they attack are cis as well as trans, because contrary to what transphobes will tell you, you can't always tell who is and isn't trans.

Rowling used her position to boost voices that do call for violence against women. Women like my sister, my aunt, my friends, real women who face a violent enough world. The damage done by Rowling's transphobia is real, her words do not exist in a vacuum. Her hate empowers the hate of others, empowers others to act on their hate.

This isn't actually difficult stuff to understand-- I'm sure somewhere there's a children's book series that touches on how casual cruelty and bigotry can enable/strengthen violent evil... well, I'm sure I'll think of one.

But Rowling doesn't use her platform to talk shit about transwomen. She uses her platform to talk shit about cis men pretending to be transwomen to sneak into women's safe space.

You know, kinda like all the people who sue their platform to call out white people pretending to be black, such as Rachel Dolezal, Shaun King, or that one professor. Do you judge famous people who highlight those behaviors too, because they result in mixed-raced people's ethnicity being questioned?

"Cis men pretending to be transwomen to sneak into women's safe space" is a fucking boogeyman that only results in more women (both cis and trans) being attacked in safe spaces.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-11 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, but the same is true of all the people who see Rachel Dolezal in every lighter-skinned POC, yet nobody calls for cancelling such people.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-11 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Shaun King isn't white, he's just an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-11 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell this to twitter and youtube, because I've seen a ton of black people calling him out for being a white guy pretending to be black.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
Nope they can’t always tell. There are even cis women on Twitter who have stories of being side eyed at best and outright challenged since all this bathroom shit exploded.

I’m a cis woman and do not CARE if trans women are in the facility with me. I don’t care what anyone’s genitals look like, I’m not even thinking about that. I just want to piss in peace and I’m sure she does too. What I do care about is being reduced to my womb/potential to have babies and gross gender stereotypes in general (I thought we see past all that?) by bigots. I don’t always wear make up or dresses, don’t always do my hair etc...to some people I might not look feminine enough. It feels like we’re going backwards.

Mixed-race people also have been side-eyed since the Rachel Dolezal shit exploded and nobody calls for immediate cancelling of anyone who suggests that a celebrity is "blackfishing" because they create a witch-hunt against all lighter-skinned POCs.

At no point did Rowling say that she is against transwomen and have, in fact, stated the opposite multiple times. She is solely focused on cis men pretending to be trans, and if you think no one should make transwomen's lives harder because of this, you should apply the same standards for people blowing up the sole 2 confirmed cases of white people pretending to be black... ever, as if it was some kind of world-wide phenonemon and every lighter-skinned POC is a white person in disguise.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, she just boosted a store that sells "trans women are men" pins.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't understand why so many people think cis men need to go to all the effort of pretending to be trans when they're hurting us and killing us and getting away with it all the time basically in broad daylight. The skirted figure on a public toilet sign isn't some magical barrier that repels abusive shithead cis men until they dress as a woman. And the fact that some of them are now talking about violence to "protect" women means that they're just as likely to barge into a public toilet and beat up a gender non-conforming cis woman as they are a trans woman.

No I don't think trans women should have their lives made harder because just because far too many cis men are complete trash.

Right, because rich and famous people suggesting that a given minority should be discriminated against totally never makes things worse for that minority. Never!
