Comment OP here--I've basically given up on ever seeing a canon version of Irene, and just tried to enjoy this version of her instead. She was smart and fun to watch at least, and then she was fridged. Which was totally unnecessary for the rest of the film to proceed as it did.

They literally gave her a life that revolved around Holmes so they fridged her to get her out of the way, instead of letting her be her OOC but fun self and go gallivanting off on a jewel heist or whatever.

the Jeremy Brett series did an excellent adaptation of 'Scandal in Bohemia' and the radio series with Clive Merrisson is excellent as well.
