I mean, your concluding statement is not wrong. If you can file the serial numbers off (change the names) and pass it off as original fic, then yeah, it was more OC than fandom from the start.

but I've been playing in panfandom RP for...shit, 15 years now? And I have never run into a situation where the characters are so samey they could form clubs. that sounds like bad RP, not a genuine situation that would lead to the conclusion that AUs are shit.

Hell, the poor guys were probably forced into 'clubs' because whoever it was who ran it decided certain different people weren't interesting enough without giving them a chance.
