I'm the anon who started the thread, and the anon who explained for me was correct. A D/s AU is an AU where everyone in the world is born either a Dom or a sub, and the society is structured around those designations. (Hence why OP made the comparison with A/B/O, another type of biological imperative AU.)

A fic where the characters are professionally into a BDSM lifestyle (and it replaces their canonical professions) would probably be called a BDSM AU. Calling it a D/s AU would only confuse readers who know D/s AU to mean an AU of the biological imperative variety.
