If they don't post crops or water-marked-to-heck things on other accounts so I can browse the breadth and depth of their work, no deal. Course, I'm also that asshole who followed an artist for nearly twenty years before going "FINE. FINE I'LL START GIVING YOU MONEY!" His Patreon portfolio is full of weird porn, but I was expecting that...

It seems odd to me that you would have seen enough of a creator's work (and liked it) that you would even consider becoming a patron, but little enough that you're surprised by the contents of their Patreon? I mean, unless all their locked content is dramatically different to their free content, but that seems a bit unlikely.

Not OP, but in my experience it's more that they promise all kinds of new/secret content in their Patreon, but really it's that you get to see a bunch of half-assed, unfinished sketches and maybe get to see the work you actually like a whole 12 hours before the people who aren't paying or it.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
That seems fair and sensible to me.

Patreon is just to support artists that you already like, not for some secret content imho.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
This seems like a curiously disingenuous remark when so many artists promise exclusive or at least limited access to some content for Patreon supporters that aren't available to the general public.

DA - I think they mean that’s what Patreon should be. And I agree. That’s also how I use it, to support creators whose content I can already access for free but whom I would like to keep seeing more of.

Same, OP, same.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
No, that’s perfectly understandable. There should be some kind of refund clause if they’re going to do that.
