Those home makeover/demo/reno shows. Some are okay, with some interesting 'here's how you make a built-in bookshelf' kind of stuff, and then some are just.....

Holy fuck.

I always end up criticizing them, though, because the people doing the home do-overs seems to always want to use nothing but white/beige/grey or white/black/dark grey, or they go nuts with EVERY PRIMARY COLOR, never anything in between. And are all those heaps of books and candles and little boxes and fluffy throws and blah blah blah *staying* in the house after the big reveal? Or are the homeowners going to be moving in their own tawdry, ancient, mis-matched stuff once the rental company whisks it all away?

(Plus - c'mon - you are a three-person family, you do NOT need an 8000 square foot house!)

I love watching those. For all the things you mentioned, I really like seeing the use of pre-war homes, antiques, and it gives me ideas for what I'd hopefully one day do (in addition to make sure your home is insulated-- I live the apartment life, so it's not under my control).

I will say so often they use the same aesthetic it gets boring. But I like Good Bones or whatever where the lady is from Detroit and she's reno all these shitty prewar houses. So great to see the architecture.

OH yes! I've seen that - i love how straightforward and practical she is - not afraid to get dirty. I love an old home being brought back to life, it's so awesome.
