120) I'm guessing that's "Hellfire"? It could have been an incredible-scary number, but that interruption in the middle kind of just ruins it for me. I wonder if they removed that for the soundtrack?

140) So from what I've heard about this game, it's all guys and one girl who is wildly OOC. I think I'll pass.

Preeeeeeeetty much. >> Just another example of what you get when you put Nomura in charge of story: plenty of interesting males and obligatory cardboard females. The only way Dissidia is useful for me is as an icon resource.

[identity profile] yui-hime.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It is pretty, I'll give Nomura that much. still thinks that Terra looks like Aeris only with green hair

[identity profile] eowynjedi.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
At least he didn't weigh down Terra with as many magical skittles beads as Onion Kid (who should be Luneth anyway), Cecil, and Sephiroth got. Still highly frustrating, though.

[identity profile] andromeda-2.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Weeeell, we're still getting FFXIII, with a female heroine, that Nomura...at least designed, I'm not so sure how heavily in the production of the game he was involved. Of course, it's still to early to tell whether or not Lightning will be a cardboard heroine or not, but yeah. If I remember correctly, I read somewhere that Nomura likes to draw male characters more than female characters. So that could be a reason why Dissidia is such a sausage fest. God, I don't even know where I was going with this comment. I don't wanna play the "Blame it all Nomura" game I suppose. He's not the only one involved with these games. And no, I'm not a big Nomura fan, I do like his character designs, and I wish he wasn't so heavily involved when it comes to story and stuff like that, but I don't want to make him into a scapegoat. That's all.

[identity profile] eowynjedi.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
He's only designer on XIII; he's much more involved with Versus. I am not at all a fan of Nomura, it's true... he's got drawing ability, but from the stuff I've seen where he had a big hand in the storyline (Dissidia, Kingdom Hearts, VII Compilation) I don't see a lot to like.

But you're right, it's not all him. The other people involved in the production of Dissidia should have done something about this, and they should have at least consulted the original writers of the earlier games instead of just letting Nomura have his way with it.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Um... since when was Nomura in charge of Dissidia's story? Last I checked, he did the character designs for this game. I recall reading in an interview that Nomura was pretty hands-off on this.

Please, please check your facts before you start bashing Nomura. Fact: he is NOT the only one working on these game projects! There are other people in charge of scenario writing and plot!

[identity profile] eowynjedi.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Really? From all interviews and sources I've seen, Nomura's been answering a lot of questions about the game, including what characters were included and why. He was not just the character designer; he was significantly involved in the production of this game. Yes, there are other people higher than him who should have put the kybosh on some of the blatant WTFery (such as Terra's characterization, Cloud of Darkness being used instead of Xande, etc), but as I see it Nomura is the main offender. And certainly Terra fits into his general pattern of female portrayal.

As for your other comment (assuming you are the same anon who's commenting on all of my responses) Nomura had significant control of scenario and storyline in Advent Children (in fact was the director of it), Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, and Kingdom Hearts. So yes, he is responsible for the fail in these projects.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Despite his involvement in these games, he did not write the story for the games himself. You're speaking as though he's a writer. "As you see it" he's the main offender. I.E. you were biased against him in the first place. Of course you're going to blame anything that you think is wrong with the game on him whether it be with art direction or gameplay or story.

And not everyone hates Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, and KH. You think all these games fail. A lot of other people enjoy them.

Let me guess, you've hated Nomura since FFVII came out, right? Nevermind that he's been working on FF since FFV, which seems to be one of your favorites.

[identity profile] eowynjedi.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
You presume much, anon. Check out some of the interview info on [livejournal.com profile] ff_compilations to see where he comments on Dissidia's characters and story. He's not credited as a writer, no, but he had a lot of say in what characters were involved and how they were portrayed.

Also, Nomura was the monster / job outfit designer in FFV. He had nothing to do with the story there. |: My low opinion of Nomura came when he started getting heavily involved in the story of the games. Others may enjoy them; I don't.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
So in other words, you're not happy with the new direction that Square Enix is going in. Which I will admit a lot of long time fans including myself aren't, either.

I still don't think he's solely the one to blame for Terra's characterization in Dissidia. What about other people working on Dissidia? You're just singling him out because you already have something against him.

I just think it's stupid when people single out Tetsuya Nomura as though he's the only one on the development team capable of making mistakes. That is what I can't stand about Nomura bashers. Anything bad is automatically his fault. That's the same kind of argument I come across when people bash him.

Amusingly enough, I know a lot more people that enjoyed Crisis Core than Revenant Wings. Not that personal experience is much of a measure, but your assumption that any game Nomura plays a part in development sucks is most likely based on data gathered in a similar matter. In other words, things you've heard from similar-minded friends.

I was hardly impressed by Terra's characterization in Dissidia, either. Interestingly enough, the first thought that crossed my mind wasn't, "Damn you, Nomuraaaaaaaaa!"

To be honest, I don't think any of us can really know who was responsible for writing the story's script and plot. Thus, blaming Tetsuya Nomura is essentially an accusation without sound evidence based on bias.

The actual gameplay is very fun. It's a very well-done game if you're playing it for the entertainment of a good combat system.

And I'm sure Terra was pretty much as portrayed before the events in "World of Ruin", which was the point for which they took it for the "storyline" of Dissidia.

Re: 140

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that baffles me is that despite S-E going through the trouble to make a fun game like Dissidia that had a lot of effort put into it, people insist on picking it apart because their "favorite character" wasn't depicted the way they thought they should be. And then somehow this is automatically Tetsuya Nomura's fault.

I've seen him get blamed for getting Cecil's weapons "wrong" and making Terra blonde when he was just going off of Amano's designs.

I agree, it's a fun game with excellent gameplay. I just wish people wouldn't insist on picking it apart. Then again, I guess it'd be a different matter if the game just flat-out sucked. Then people'd just be blaming Nomura for "making" another crappy FF spinoff.

Re: 140

[identity profile] 7thisgod.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. I've been playing Dissidia for nearly 15 hours at this point and I'm still impressed at how much effort and polish was put into the mechanics. It's incredibly fun, what more could you expect from a fighting game?

Re: 140

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently taking Nomura out of the mix would've made the game 10x better :p

Oh well, it's not just Nomura haters that nitpick this game. I frequent the gamefaqs board and people whine about how it didn't include Ramza or Vaan, lol.

Man, if the Terra fans are pissed now, imagine what would've happened if they'd (by "they" of course, that means Nomura because he's the one that does all the bad things) picked Locke instead! The shitstorm would've been amazing.

Re: 140

[identity profile] 7thisgod.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I just find it funny that for all their "STICK TO THE CANON ASSHOLE" claims, the fans are the ones that totally ignore that Terra's character was "took" from before the "World of Ruin" events.

Re: 140

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't even aware of that myself. It makes a lot more sense now. I was wondering how there could be any sort of conflict between the heroes and villains when in most FF games the hero overcomes his/her major problem by the end of the game.

So people have been pretty much bashing Nomura for nothing all this time. Awesome. That really makes my day.

Basically... making an assumption about a game that one hasn't played yet leads to making one's self look like an ass. It's also probably not a good idea to make assumptions about a game that hasn't been translated yet.

haha THIS.

[identity profile] liltingkricket.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
120: Nope, it's there. What's worse, imo, is how they put 'Heaven's Light' and 'Hellfire' on the same track, so if you want to hear one you're forced to hear the other, or else skip to the right spot for Hellfire or stop awkwardly in the middle for Heaven's Light. =/

Still, they're both great songs. I just wish they'd decided to to that a little differently. >>
