101 - I hate how being in a fandom is something you have to be "devoted" too. God forbid it's just something you take lightly, just for fun.

120 - Is that's what I think it is. . . I'm not sure if I'd say it's the most powerful (I can never claim something to be "the most") but it's up there.

130 - THAT SHOW IS AWESOME. DON'T EVEN TRY TO DENY IT. Seriously, any show with Blue Beetle = instant win.

132 - It's just fiction. If the devil does exist, I don't think he'd be like any interpretation of him you've read about. The author is just making up their own character for him.

I dunno. I mean, to be really involved in fandom, to take your time to write the fanfiction and draw the fanart, doesn't that take a bit of devotion to your fandom? The vast majority of the people in fandom are in fandom because they really are devoted to something.

I mean yeah, it should be taken lightly, with a grain of salt, and people should have fun with it. But to turn out the good stuff, the stuff that people love to read and look at, you have to have a certain amount of devotion.

But there comes a point when the bad things end up overtaking what is good for it in the first place, and it becomes hard to continue doing it. A person can like the source material, but lose all desire to be a part of the fandom because of the drama or wank or things going on in their fandom area.

I have been in fandoms where I was literally bashed and attacked for my opinions and works, and I don't love the source material enough to continue engaging with fandom like that even if originally I did.

I guess I just haven't yet met the wank that could drive me out of a fandom.

Except that since it's all for fun, you aren't actually obliged to write fanfiction and draw fanart or have any sort of loyalty to it. If you care enough to do all that, that's great, have fun. Different people get obsessed to different extents (hell, God knows I can get overly sucked into fandom).

Fandom is never a commitment. You don't have to participate at least a certain amount, or continue to participate if it doesn't interest you anymore. People's interests can change at the drop of a hat.

The point wasn't that interests change, though. I've dropped in and out of lots of fandoms because I've just lost interest after a while. The point was that letting something chase you out of fandom is kind of ludicrous.

Why is it ludicrous? I seriously don't get this. If someone is not having fun in a particular fandom--for whatever reason--why should he/she be obligated to stay in it?

Fandom is supposed to be fun, not a srs bsns devotion contest. :/

I never said it should be a srs bsns devotion contest. Devotion to a fandom doesn't need to be OMG SRS BSNS. I need to have a certain amount of attachment to a fandom before I want to write for it, but I don't get so enthralled with the fandom that I'm completely obsessed.

It's ludicrous to me because it's fandom and it's not serious business. You shouldn't be taking it so seriously that the wank makes you not want to be reading fic and looking at art. Wank is not hard to ignore at all, and there's no reason it should be affecting people so much that they can't stand the fandom anymore.

Fuck, that was me, in case it wasn't clear. I'm not very observant today.

I don't know about anyone else, but writing fanfiction (and, to a lesser extent, making icons/making AMVs/putting together FSTs) doesn't take any devotion for me at all. I love writing and I love messing around with icons, video, and music -- so I'm doing all of that for the exact same reason I'm in the fandom in the first place. It isn't devotion or doing it to ~gift the fandom~ (though occasionally I love writing fics or making icons for specific friends if they like my style!) or anything like that. I'm still just doing it for fun, because I enjoy it.

If I'm not writing for that fandom, it'd be for another, or another, or original stuff (and sometimes it IS all at once). It's not so much "I'm devoted to this/these fandoms" as it is "I like this series, I like this fandom, and I like writing." If my like of the fandom changes, I'll probably leave it, keep liking the series, and keep writing. If my interest in the series wanes, I'll just switch over to writing something else.

I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS. Actually very representative of most people who do fanworks and are really involved in/active in fandom. But just sorta throwing in my two cents? I don't really have a devotion, it's just me doing things I already love doing in the sandbox of something else that I also enjoy.

I guess for me it is more of a devotion thing, then. I watch plenty of ficcable movies, TV shows, read plenty of ficcable books, that kind of stuff, but I never feel the urge to write for it unless I actually feel somewhat attached to the source.

Seriously. So maybe they weren't "devoted enough" in the first place. Why should they have had to be? It's just fandom, it's not a job. What's "devoted enough" and why does it matter?
