Honestly, I think a big part of the US fanbase is so fond of Alfred for the TYPE of "American" he is--annoying and kind of overbearing but ultimately well-meaning and optimistic, as opposed to the raging psychopath he could easily be portrayed as in just about any period beyond the WWII strips. We know a lot of you guys aren't pleased with our government track record, so any depiction of us from overseas that tries to bring up the good as well as the bad is...sort of awesome and inspiring.
Oh god, that sounds so conceited and I'm sorry. But that stupid character is basically the only thing that's made me feel something like respect for my own country in a long, long time (well, maybe not the ONLY thing, but the other big one's still pending because I'm a pessimist).
Uh, yeah, I'll stop preaching now. wtf. PS: OP, you are adorable. Let's watch horror movies together.
