128. I just think it's stupid to automatically assume that it's "ZOMG RACIST" when it's more likely just stupid execs trying to cash in on the popularity of the actors they chose.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-27 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's both.

[identity profile] milo1047.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, there's this thing called "burden of proof." If you can, you know, prove that the execs are being reciast dicks and not just idiots, fine. But I'm not gonna get out my placards and bullhorn for the witch hunt until there IS proof.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-27 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. The execs don't have to be saying "Let's cast this movie in a racist way." The point is that the system is already in place for them to go with white as the default, to assume that they should just go to white actors first (even when we're talking about child actors and unknowns). It's not about pointing at a particular exec and telling him he's a Nazi. It's saying all these assumptions they've gone with for decades should change.

[identity profile] tl--dr.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

[identity profile] wanderingscribe.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I'm not even in the fandom and damn do I agree with this.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
sort of like heterosexuality is a default.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-27 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're being deliberately obtuse, to be honest. There's a thing called institutionalised racism. Plus this kind of whitewashing has happened before - look at what happened to The Wizard of Earthsea.

And what witch hunt are you talking about? How is exposing racism equal to a witch hunt?

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
because you're assuming that racism is being executed deliberately. because people are dragging out the pitchforks and torches instead of educating.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The only people I've read talking about deliberate racism are people defending the decision. It creates a strawman of "deliberate racism" that's easy enough to knock down by offering some other reason for casting white (they're just clueless/they just want to make money/they think these white actors or white actors in general will be more popular), as if any of those things make the actions not racism. Iow, wanting to totally ignore institutionalized racism in favor of proving the people involved in the movie are not bad guys if you get to know them.

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't really matter why the execs are being racist. It doesn't matter if, in their heart of hearts they don't want to see an Asian lead character, or if they just never thought about it, or if they're somehow stupid enough to think it wouldn't matter. I don't need to look into their minds or their souls to know that their actions, these things they're doing? Are totally racist.

They are treating white as the default, they are white washing an implicitly non-Western world, and they are assuming this is okay. That is racist. How much proof do you really need?

[identity profile] ali-wildgoose.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Can you think of a SINGLE, NON-RACIST reason for them to cast white actors to play non-white characters?

PLEASE NOTE: "They just want to make money" is not a non-racist reason.

[identity profile] vaultedthewall.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Assuming that even if - even if - those actors are somehow financial choice and the good ole money-loving exects are completely oblivious to anything else, it still sends a message (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UnfortunateImplications) that they need to be made aware of.

[identity profile] tl--dr.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Because there are no wildly popular child actors of East Asian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brenda_Song) or Native American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanessa_Hudgens) descent. None at all.

Couldn't be that the "popularity" the movie is cashing in on is the popularity of the fantasy of a world turned white? Which is...uh...sort of kind of a racist fantasy???

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Because all the teenybopper idols are white. How many magazines and tv shows and stuff have non white idols as the leads, the fantasy boyfriend or girlfriend? The making it about the money doesn't matter since it is only white actors that are seen as capable as bringing in the money.

[identity profile] tl--dr.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
See, although I think there are some direct institutionalized trends that make Ashley Tisdale a bigger star than Brenda Song or Vanessa Hudgens, that makes Hilary Duff an enormous star while Raven Simone still has no major career outside of the Disney Channel, I disagree with the assertion that "all" the teenybopper idols are white because it lends credence to the idea that the casting directors chose noname whitebread actress x for a role Vanessa Hudgens would have physically fit far more suitably not because they were desperate to whitewash the Avatar world for whatever subconscious reason, but because CONSCIOUSLY they were just trying to draw in the teen crowd by casting stars that will make them a lot of money. When...there ARE stars who would make them a lot MORE money than the random actors they cast, who aren't white, so there seemed to be something a little more conscious, a little more sinister going on that they'd literally choose to make every casting choice a whitewashed one. But you're right that it's still totally beside the point: whether they cast bigname white child actors to make themselves money, or whitened up the Avatarverse to make themselves money, it doesn't matter, because it's still exploiting racism for cash, and plays into the exact same offensive, deeply rooted power imbalances. And claiming the two issues are at all separate - that trying to make money by whitening up a universe is somehow less racist than whitening it up for any other reason - is not an argument that holds water, either way.

SO BASICALLY: IAWTC, I LIKE TO TL;DR

*clicks*

Wow, Vanessa Hudgens looks like she would have been a perfect Katara.
