S/he's seeing the BAWWW HOLLYWOOD IS SO RACIST posts from people who are writing letters that s/he thinks will be ineffective - it's right there in the secret. And that letter writing campaign? Started with people discussing how racist Hollywood is in relation to the Avatar movie, complaining about it, and deciding they wanted to do something about it, so I don't really see why you think people talking to each other about things they find disgusting is so ineffective, when generally they come together to do productive things, not pat each other on the back for whining - which is what this secret, on the other hand, certainly seems to be gunning for.

I think it all depends on the location. If people are talking to each other about things that they find disgusting their personal little blog in their personal of the internet and it never leaves that area, then yes, all they are doing is patting each other on the back for whining. Especially if they add in 'sticking it to the man' mentality. THAT, I believe, it was secret-maker was complaining about.

The effective stuff is what this letter-writing campaign has started. That actually gets something done.

Reread the secret. S/he mentions people who talk about having written "10 letters to Mike and Bryan and M. Night" right there in the post, man. Avatar fandom is not complaining in isolation at all, it's been uniting and mobilizing to do something pretty much since the news first came out, and that's overtly what the secret is complaining about. If you want to complain about something different, something that's...not actually happening...then that's your prerogative, but it has nothing to do with the secret you want to agree with.

YOU read the post again. The only time he mentions that is in the list of excuses people give for ranting. This letter-writing campaign is a good thing, it will get things done, and I wish it well. But I'm with the OP - I don't want to hear you whining about it AGAIN, to ME, who has NOTHING to do with the movie industry.

I think the point of the secret is "Talk to the movie industry and leave the rest of us the fuck alone, please."

Re: 128

(Anonymous) 2008-12-27 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait. So it's important to inform people about the problem and get the word out about the campaign but they're to do it in such a way that doesn't involve talking about it to anyone who isn't a movie exec. Even though the only way the campaign will succeed is if people who are not movie execs - i.e. the vast majority of the population - write letters to the movie execs. And the only way to get the vast majority involved is to talk about the problem but it's only okay if you don't talk to people who aren't movie execs... do you see the problem with your logic?

Re: 128

[identity profile] geministar01.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm seeing a problem with YOUR logic.

It's not that they shouldn't get the word out, but "getting the word out" DOES NOT mean making yet another post on your blog for your F-list to see. It means making ONE post. ONE. Then you go somewhere else on the internet and make another. And then go somewhere else and make another.

Posting over and over again on your blog is spamming your F-list, which is annoying and ignorant.

You keep adjusting your argument to try and be right. People tend to notice that kind of thing.

Oh no! People are posting what they want on their blogs! How terrible of them to use their blogs for their intended purpose.

Re: 128

[identity profile] tl--dr.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, it's not our problem if every time someone mentions the letter-writing campaign in a post, while ranting about the casting, you/the secret poster see that as FINDING AN EXCUSE TO RANT MORE, and not as someone saying "hey, I wrote a letter on this INHERENTLY UPSETTING issue, why don't you? Here are the reasons why this is important, by the way". Seriously, the only people I'm seeing whining are all of you who can't seem to get it through your heads that this stuff matters, the people who are bringing it up bring it up because it matters and they'd like to bring more people's attentions to what they think matters. You obviously don't have to participate in any letter-writing campaigns or posts of anger, but by asking to be left the fuck alone you're basically implying that you think it's more important that your fandom experience be an apolitical one, that you not have to be aware of other people caring about an issue you are free to care or not care about, than that people do what it takes to start the kind of movement that can actually have some effect on the casual racism of Hollywood.

And I'm sorry dude, but your fandom experience is NOT more important than issues like racism which negatively affect people's lives in huge, destructive ways, every day. This is a minor annoyance to you. Racism is a major problem. You can accept that or you can not accept that, but one way or another it's true, so people aren't going to be leaving the 'rest of you' alone any time soon.

geministar isn't the brightest cookie in the box. All those words will tax her brain :( But I agree with you completely.

Re: 128

[identity profile] tl--dr.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, I'm sure I'll get a response after this that accuses me of not having sympathy for her poor incapable-of-filtering-her-own-flist eyes and perhaps should keep my tl;dr to myself from now on, but god, this attitude really really infuriates me. It's just so...selfish. And hypocritically whiny.

Re: 128

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me either. I've never seen her actually listen to what someone else has to say. She's only interested in being right, which is a shame. But I love the way Avatar fandom is coming together on this issue. It's just a pity that people have to keep protesting this kind of thing.

And icon love!

Re: 128

[identity profile] tl--dr.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, well, the attitude of "you should stop saying things that make me feel uncomfortable or you're being a whiny self-righteous dick, whereas I'm just expecting what I deserve out of life" generally comes hand in hand with a distinct inability (perhaps that should be "refusal") to listen, so this doesn't totally surprise me lol, but I keep hoping and hoping if these discussions get had enough times eventually some glimmer of awareness will strike, somewhere. lol idk.

But yeah, Avatar fandom really has been impressing me with its overall lack of stupid on this issue! Like, at least the parts of the fandom I frequent have pretty unanimously condemned these casting choices and that's a big change from what I'm used to seeing. I'm not sure if it's a testament to our fandom growing up or to random tween whitebread stars as Katara and Sokka just being THAT undeniably, laughably wrong, but either way it's pretty nice to see. :)

AND OMG YES THAT WAS SERIOUSLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE LINES IN THE SHOW ahahaha that episode overall was one of my favorites. "Tearbending!" (The icon is by [livejournal.com profile] sporkyadrasteia at [livejournal.com profile] iconnaissances, btw!)

You're much more positive than I am :) However, you also set an admirable example so I'll try to be more patient the next time something like this happens.

Avatar fandom is made of win! If anyone can make the movie studios see sense, it'll be you guys - the movie might unfortunately go ahead as planned BUT you brought a huge amount of attention to the issue. Plenty of people are going to boycott it.

Ember Island Players was amazing! And Toph is generally awesome. Thank you for the icon info, I'm going to check it out now. Have a good day, bb! :)
