101) Eh, you know, sometimes you can have negative memories associated with something you love to the point where you just don't want to deal with it anymore. Ultimately, it's just entertainment, and nearly all of it dates itself eventually anyway. And even if you never enjoy it again, there's going to be another show out there to take your attention, so, no real loss.

Still, it's best to know when to walk away from fandom before it totally poisons you. I know some people just don't believe it, but ships don't have to be defended, no one needs to be convinced to think something other than what they do and it really honestly doesn't matter what some other person over the internet likes or dislikes. As soon as it stops being fun, it's time to move on.

104) I'm in the same boat. I've read worse. I honestly don't see much different between Twilight and your standard cookie cutter Romance.

126) The Doctor has always had a god complex. It's perhaps somewhat earned. And he's not one of those all good and loving gods either. He's one of the most entitled, control-freakish, possessive-yet-stand-offish characters ever out there. Lord help you if you ever disagree with him.

128) See 101 -- that'd be the fandom I flirted with for a while before deciding that it just wasn't fun.

129) The anime had many good points. The characters were poignant, emotive, entrancing, attractive and came with so much potential. However the plot flat out didn't work. The ultimate revelation that the humunculi were trying to make people make the philosopher's stone in order to keep them from doing so makes no rational sense. Scar dragging Kimbley to a rooftop using only his teeth while he bleeds copiously from both severed arms makes no sense. Ed took a year to use his automail arm and leg, Archer took less than a month to perfectly use half his body including his head. The philosopher's stone was so weak as to be essentially useless. Characters did things because they were convenient, not because they furthered their own agendas, the story flat out contradicted its premise in several places. I have high hopes that the new Anime will have the strong characterization of the original Anime, with the addition of the tight, sensible story line of the manga.

TL;DR: People are going to have opinions, some of them won't agree with yours.

153) Maybe when gays are fully accepted in society with the same rights as everyone else I'd consider wanting to be one. For now I'm content with my own sexual orientation, since I still get man-on-me action, and there are a lot more heterosexual men out there than gays.

126. I don't mind if the Doctor has a god-complex, though I do mind when the show seems to buy into it. That's why I like my Donna, who calls him on it.

Oh absolutely. That's when the show is at it's best: When the companion brings the Doctor back from whatever misguided notion he has.

I don't think the Show believes he's a god. I think they think he's seriously overpowered, excruciatingly lonely, and flawed with a tendency to believe he knows best and an unwillingness bend. They've had him be excruciatingly wrong on a number of occasions in the last couple of seasons -- and he's nearly gotten all the universes destroyed because of it. He'd rather let everyone die than personally kill another being -- no matter how unremittingly destructive they are. He is more accepting of his enemies faults than those who love him. If anything the last few seasons have been a rather cutting indictment against unchecked power.

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Right! I think the Doctor is an awesome example of a flawed character (though the latest incarnation's flaws are my pet peeves so I'm glad I'll never meet the fellow; he'd drive me up walls), but I just get worried when the show forgets this, and drums up the Christ imagery.

Again, why the latest season has been my favorite of New Who.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not a Christian, so I didn't notice any Christ imagery. But I tend to see the Doctor as a natural bad guy that is kept just on the side of good through the aide of his companions. Megalomania is just part of the bad-guy arsenal. The doctor tries to curb his tendency to want to simply take over and make things go his way only through sheer dint of will. He really needs a companion to give him a moral compass, because without them he has a tendency to fall into absurd absolutes: Total hands off when a small effort would make a big difference, or total hands on when he goes into savior mode and ends up nearly destroying a people in an attempt to make them conform his ideals.

Number 4 is still my favorite. He didn't take himself quite so seriously, but underneath the goofy-amiable exterior he was cunning, ruthless, and several steps ahead. 10 has a bit of that going for him, but 10 is a lot less affectionate towards people. More romantic, but less loving if you know what I mean.

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Romantic works well for me as well. There's a lot more idealizing (dehumanizing), and even a sense of ritualized selfishness in romance. And I think your description as the Doctor as a natural 'bad guy' is an effective one, and, ironically, one that might allow me to like the Doctor more when the show returns.

Where is my secret did I imply that having a different opinion was the problem? It's quite possible to be sensible and polite (as you have been) while expressing a difference of opinion.

My problem comes in with the scorn I sometimes feel I receive from a number of people who prefer the manga. What bothers me is that scorn, not the fact that they prefer the manga.

Heh, about two days ago in this forum I said to a FMA secret that the plot of the anime was incoherent. Exactly that word. As far as I know, I was the only one to say that. Soooo I figured you were referring to me.

I stand by the incoherent assessment. After episode 25 I winced my way through the rest of the episodes, because they simply made no sense, and began mining the show for its potential rather than what was actually delivered.

I have friends who prefer the anime to the manga, but not for plot reasons -- they like the way the characters were depicted. They liked the shipping fodder. They like the drama and emotional tension. But they agree with me that the plot is so full of holes it borders on comedy. Our response? Write fics that fill in the plot holes. AU and AT the ever loving crap out of it. Take what is good and ignore what is crap.

As for the Anime vs Manga retardedness -- it goes both ways. It really does. There will always be some shrill person who sounds off on how much better her venue is than the other. But I think the vast majority of the fandom is pretty respectful.

Oh. I think that's coincidence. I've been in the FMA fandom since 2005, and the 'incoherent' thing has come up before. I might have skimmed over your response and caught onto that particular word by osmosis, but my secret was not about you. You're rational and polite; not at all the type of fan that has been upsetting me.

It's mostly become an issue since the new anime was announced, though. Before that, the fandom seemed much more civil in general.
