101 - THIS. My mom's always said you choose how you feel about any given thing, so it's made me think twice before saying something like "X made me feel like this" or "Y ruined Z for me." Other things/people can't do that. You make the choice to feel/act the way you do. Plus, even people with valid "excuses" like "I shared the fandom with someone who is no longer in my life, and seeing/reading it again is a painful reminder of them," I think "ruined" is too strong a word.

This line of reasoning seems like kind of a slippery slope. If it's true that we are each responsible for how we react to things, then there is no moral obligation for us to interact kindly and thoughtfully to other people. Suppose I act shittily toward somebody. Nobody should be allowed to call me out on it, because it's that person's fault for feeling shitty.

tl;dr: this sounds kind of like blaming the victim?

Maybe so. TBH, I've never thought of it that way before. But still, if you DO treat someone shittily, shouldn't the question be "Why'd you do it?" rather than asking the person you acted out towards "Why do you feel shitty because of what they said?"

Not everyone is a "victim," though. A lot of people overreact to little things. A lot of people don't understand that much of the world is beyond ANYONE'S control, and bitching about it doesn't/won't change things.

If EVERYONE adopted a policy of thinking about why they feel the way they do -about thinking before acting at all- then maybe there'd be more goodwill in this world. But that's just MY thought.
