But... Peter David?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
John M. Ford (may he rest in peace)

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter David is highly variable.

I certainly haven't read them all but some of the Trek books were really sexist so I don't blame you.

I mean, dude was/is/forever shall be Garak. He would know more about Star Trek lore than any other author and I am deliberately including William Shatner in that.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean William Shatner's Trek books are godawful so

yeah

Agreed. Terrible, terrible books.

Man, Shatner is a decent writer--but dude's ego won't let him be a good writer.

What about Gene Roddenberry?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I absolutely would not trust Gene to write a good Star Trek novel

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
He did write the novelisation of the first movie and canonised t'hy'la, though!

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, for one thing, he wasn't a novelist.

Also, many of his creative ideas for Trek were demonstrably goofy. And if you're considering gender relations as an aspect as OP seems to be, he seems to have been kind of a sex pest.

Yeah, for me the best Star Trek Novelist are James Blish, AJR, Peter David, and Diane Duane. I can be sure I'm going to read a good ST book if they wrote it. Anyone else and it's a coin flip.

Oh, and Melinda M. Snodgrass. But she's one of my favorite authors period.
