Okami is probably the PS2 game I sunk the most time into, and I still adore it ~15 years later.

I've played a couple of LoZ games (though not the most recent ones) and ... they never made much of an impression on me? I know they're highly regarded and you're "supposed to" like them but ... eh.

You're not alone, OP.

I love the Zelda series, but when I first played Okami in its initial 2006 release, I was blown away by how much better it was than the current Zelda of its time. ...Sorry, I just don't like Twilight Princess.

Okami is a great game but I was so terrible at the combat! Zelda was much easier on that front.

I'm the same. Played Okami on Wii, never finished.

I'm surprised they tell you this, because they're quite different imho.

PUH-REACH!

Oh, and how is it that no one ever realizes that "You should play Zelda!" has the extra meaning of "you have to buy a whole new game console!"?

There is always the yarrharr option with the older Zelda games, emulators have improved a lot from their beginnings.

Okami's setting is certainly a lot more interesting than the generic heroic fantasy setting Zelda tends to be, especially if you know anything about Japanese myths. The only thing the games really have in common is that they're both adventure games.

I never played any prior Zelda games, but I will say the art for Breath of the Wild may be worth checking out if the Japanese/Shinto vibe was what appealed to you with Okami. While it’s more cartoony in general and the opposite visually, being very pastel and soft-focus instead of ukiyo-e brushstrokes, BoTW has some very Japanese touches with its character designs of ancient mystics, kotodama, dragons, and a mountain god/mononoke.

Look at me your exact opposite. LoZ is my favorite franchise and I never bothered with okami cause it looked boring af.
