omg props for using 'oater' correctly in the wild. I have literally never heard/read anyone using that word outside of crossword puzzles before.

OP - It's just an old US slang term for a western movie or TV show. 😅 It comes from "oat," obviously, like you're going to feed a horse. Like the other user above, I partly picked it up from crossword puzzles.
