Depending on the school/prof/local culture they might have the feeling that non-cishet pairings might not be received well. Or they might be closeted and fearful of giving people hints.

SIGH. UGH. I want to tell you to casually bring it up but there's no way lol. Have you ever messaged the author via AO3 to ask if they'd mind sending you the fic? You're a big fan etc etc.

Because maybe...it would be crossing a line of propriety (I'd be flattered, embarrassed, and taken aback, to be sure) unless you guys become friends and fic/pairings come up.

Could you maybe casually bring up the show/book/whatever the fic was from? "Hey, have you ever seen/read xxx, it seems like something you'd enjoy!" and maybe see where the conversation goes from there? It's not explicitly going "DID YOU WRITE THIS FIC??" but could take you a bit nearer being able to ask.
