"Death of the Author" was no doubt inspired by the multitude of students and possibly more than a few tenured faculty, who treated each an every work as an autobiography delivered through some sort of code. And thus was Dr. Frankenstein clearly identified as Percy or George and the Monster with Mary and the whole conflict reduced to fear of childbirth. Heaven forbid that fiction authors actually write fiction rather than easter egg hunts for future literature students.

On a related subject, no I don't think we really need to know who was so vain, he probably thought the song was about him. It's a great song that works for a large number of ex-lovers.
