I mean I grew up when colorblind casting for cheap kids TV was the norm, so you could regularly see for instance a black kid getting picked on by a white kid for being a nerd without race ever being mentioned. You could also see a black kid being the most popular guy in a suburban school. Because it's fiction for kids and bringing race issues in when you're trying to tell another story would derail things and you still get to have diversity. I thought it was pretty neato I and we should bring it back, and I am totally cool with fanworks doing it in the meantime.
